French spokesman highlights Syrian president's visit to Paris

Syrian President Hafez al-Assad on Monday sent a cable of congratulations to French President Jacques Chirac on the occasion of the national day of France on July 14. The Syrian President expressed joy over the constant development of relations and cooperation between the two countries on the ground of mutual respect and confidence.

He praised President Chirac and the French government's "stands and efforts exerted for establishing just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East."

"I am looking forward for my forthcoming visit to France, and I am sure that our meeting then and the talks between officials of the two governments would put into actual realization our aspirations in the service of our peoples' interests," the cable read.

Spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry said the state visit by President al-Assad to Paris is considered as remarkable in the history of Syrian-French relations, " This visit in itself reflects the high quality of the relations between our two countries," the spokesman said. He described the visit as of political dimensions.

In a press conference held in Paris on Monday, the French spokesman said the summit will discuss a number of regional and international issues, foremost among which being the Middle East peace process at various tracks, especially the Syrian track.

He added that the two Presidents will discuss the development of the European-Mediterranean partnership, the partnership between Syria and the European Union and a number of bilateral issues. Also to be discussed between the two Presidents are scientific and technical cooperation, the spokesman said.

He also expressed hope for developing economic relations, saying, "Trade with Syria does not quite match the quality of the political relation. We hope to be able to improve our economic relation. "
