Jordanian Muslim Brotherhood shoura elections results
Jordan, Politics, 7/13/1998

Though the "Muslim Brotherhood" group in Jordan has not yet officially announced the results of the group's Shoura council (central leadership) elections which were concluded Friday night, so far leaked news says that the group's most extreme wing, called "the Hawks" by the press has won the the majority of seats.

Independent Islamist writer Ziad Abu Ghaneima said it is early to give an integrated analysis of the results of "brotherhood" Shoura elections. In an exclusive statement to the Lebanese daily as-Safir, Abu Ghaneima said, "Muslim brothers reject violence in principle. What is promoted by the press to inclination towards extremism just means commitment to the group's political principles, especially towards the Jordanian-Israeli treaty and public freedoms."

The Secretary General of the Islamic labor front party, Abdul Latif Arabeiyat, and his predecessor, Ishaq al-Farhan, lost their two seats. They are from the moderate Islamist symbols. The former held the post of speaker of the Jordanian Parliament and the latter held several ministerial posts. Simultaneously, no other moderate members were nominated.
