Tankers dispute between Iraq and Kuwait
Kuwait-Iraq, Politics, 7/13/1998
Iraq objected at the U.N and the Arab league on the Kuwaiti government's desire to selling five Iraqi tankers that were granted to Kuwait after the Gulf War.
Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed refused to commit to the Iraqi call. He said, "The United Nations allowed us to sell these tankers but we have not sold them yet," pointing out that he asked the state-owned Kuwaiti Petroleum Corporation to sell the tankers.
He said, "These tankers now are Kuwaiti ones, the United Nations transmitted their ownership to Kuwait."
The dispute resurfaced when Iraq asked the U.N to press on Kuwait to cancel a $16.5 million deal to sell the tankers.
