King Hassan announces 25,000 youths will be hired annually
Morocco, Economics, 7/10/1998

In a speech he delivered on the occasion of Youth Day, celebrated this Thursday, to commemorate the 69th birthday of Morocco's King Hassan II, the king said a draft law on employment and youth integration was adopted by a recent ministers' council meeting and that the two houses of the parliament will study the text before the end of the current parliamentary session.

King Hassan II announced on Wednesday that 25,000 young graduates will be hired this year and that the issue of unemployment, after the Sahara issue, is at the top of national priorities.

He underlined that this law will guarantee a 25,000 jobs annually to youths who have completed two years after high school and those who hold university degrees. "If this law is enforced in form and essence, it will ensure employment to 25,000 youths every year, i.e. 100,000 over four years," the sovereign said.

King Hassan added that unemployment is an international phenomenon that exists both in developing and developed countries, in view of population growth and the inadequacy between the reality and the prospective vision of education and training programs. He recalled that he had asked the previous government to study the experience of other countries, in particular regarding the issue of unemployed university graduates, Map reported.

The king also announced that a national colloquy to look into the follow-up of this law will be held at the beginning of next fall with the participation of the government, the parliament, civil services, the private sector and all partners concerned with employment and further training.

This initiative will be debated every three or four years in parallel to demographic growth and the evolution of training methods, the message went on.
