Sudanese opposition party calls for protection of explosions suspects
Sudan, Politics, 7/10/1998
The head of the Sudanese opposition Nation Party's bureau in Cairo, Salah Galal, stated that the leaders of the party have held communications with political forces and human rights organizations to guarantee the safety of party leaders on trial in Sudan.
Sudanese security forces have arrested leaders of the Nation's Party in Sudan in connection with explosions that recently took place in Sudan. Galal told ArabicNews.com that the party talked to a private official from a human rights organization and called him immediately to Khartoum to inform him about the events that took place toward the party's leaders. Galal said they will also confer with the United Nation's Secretary-General Kofi Annan and international and regional rights groups, to form delegations to Sudan as a sort of help in releasing the arrested.
Galal said the explosions taking place in Sudan are the result of the government's policies that rely on terrorism and violence.
He also stated that there was an attempted coup d'etat in Sudan three weeks before, where forty person were arrested and they are currently charged with high treason.
Meanwhile, The Sudanese daily Akhbar al-Youm on Thursday quoted high-ranking legal sources as saying that a person charged in connection with the recent explosions in Khartoum had committed suicide, and his colleague who tried suicide was rescued. The paper added that the rescued person gave "very important information" about the explosions.
The report said that the number of persons accused of being involved in the explosions increased to 18, including members of the Nation, Community, Baath and Democratic Federation parties.
