Prisoner's day in Lebanon as Israeli troops escalate bombardment
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 7/10/1998
The Israeli occupation forces on Thursday afternoon bombarded the hills and heights of al-Tuffah district. Lebanese security sources said that Israeli positions in al-Zaffata shelled al-Rafi mount, Tallat Mleita, Litani river course, al-Tasse spring and al-Salawqi and al-Hajeir valleys.
The bombardment coincided with heavy machine fire and mock raids by Israeli jets flying at low altitudes over al-Nabatieh and al-Tuffah districts. At night the Israeli occupation troops expanded their attacks against areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon. The bombardment covered several districts in the western sector and al-Tuffah district.
Lebanese security sources said the Israeli artillery at Muheibib position shelled on Thursday the towns of Eita al-Jabal, Hadatha al-Zaatar mount, and Serbin in the Western sector. At the same time the occupation troops shelled from al-Zafaata position Ein Bu Sawar, al-Rafai mount, and al-Zahrani river course.
Meanwhile the Arab and international symposium marking the Lebanese war prisoner day started on Thursday at the headquarters of the Lebanese Press Union. It bears the theme "freedom for Lebanese and Arab hostages held in the Israeli jails." The symposium was convened at the invitation of the follow-up committee in support of the cause of Lebanese detainees in Israeli jails.
In an inaugural speech, the representative of Lebanese Foreign Ministry, Samir Khouri said the need to release Lebanese detainees in Israeli jails has become more important.
On behalf of the Arab League, Ahmad al-Audat described the Israeli decision to hold Lebanese detainees without trial in Israeli jails as state-run terrorism against Lebanese and civilian citizens. Thereby, he said, it is a violation of international agreements and human rights principles.
Secretary of the follow-up committee, Muhammad Safa, called for establishing a center to rehabilitate victims of torture in the Israeli jails.
The symposium which will conclude its meetings on Saturday was attended by several Lebanese parliamentarians and world figures concerned with human rights, representatives of several Arab embassies in Beirut and families of the detained people.
