Iranian air base near Afghanistan border

Iran has established an air base in the region of Mashhad, in the northeastern part of the country, to enable it to enhance its military forces near its border with Afghanistan, something which caused the Taleban movement to deny presenting any support to the Iranian opposition movement of the "Mujahidin Khalk."

The Iranian news agency said that this Martyr Kaveh base in Mashhad is equipped with advanced missiles.

The new base comes under the control of the air force, and its main job will be providing support to existing land forces in the region, and guaranteeing the security of the Iranian region near Afghanistan.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard reinforced its presence near the borders with Afghanistan, while Tehran accused the Taleban many times of reinforcing its presence on the Afghan border with Iran and of launching attacks on Iranian villages.

The Iranian reinforcements came after accusations were directed by Iranian newspapers against the Taleban in recent weeks of presenting support for the armed Mujahidin Khalk movement that is opposed to the Iranian government and is said to have members in Iraq. The movement is said to have leftist leanings.

There is also an Afghani airport Shin-Dad south of the city of Herat inside Afghanistan that is under the control of the Taliban. Afghanistan's Ambassador to the UN Razan Farhadi who represents the Northern Alliance of Afghanistan, the opposition to the ruling Islamist Taliban, told ArabicNews.com that there are "two" Afghanistan governments and our relations with Iran are good.
