Moroccan FM asks unions to respect previous agreements
Morocco, Economics, 7/8/1998

Moroccan Foreign Minister Driss Basri called for finding mechanisms to implement the agreements signed between the previous government, unions and business owners.

The Moroccan official suggested convening a preliminary meeting between government and the unions to study the urgent issues as soon as possible, confirming the importance of studying the pending issues upon which agreements were reached in August 1996.

The representative of the Public Union for Laborers, Mohammed al-Sharat, confirmed that workers are facing more problems in the area freedom of the union and in the implementation of the labor code.

Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi said earlier this week that it is his top priority to deal with these issues of pending problems in the labor code to facilitate the submission of an amended law to parliament next fall, and that negotiations will deal with employers-enterprises conflicts, setting forth a social pact platform that would define the principles regulating relations between the government, enterprises and trade unions.

The unions have concerns about workers being laid off because of their unionist activities, the improvement of working conditions, further vocational training, and the preservation of workers' purchasing power, and low-cost housing among other issues.
