Opposition accused of recent acts of violence in Yemen
Yemen, Politics, 7/8/1998
Yemeni Security officials have accused members of the opposition Yemeni Grouping for Reform (Islaah) party of being directly involved in recent Yemeni unrest.
An official statement circulated in Sanaa said that extremists in the reform party played an important part in disorder aimed at destabilizing the country's security and stability.
The coalition, led by Parliament Speaker Abdullah Hussein al-Ahmar, criticized a decision last month to increase the prices of fuel and basic food stuffs by as much as 40%. The Yemeni decision to increase prices falls in the context of the economic reform programs Yemen embarked on in 1995. The reforms have been initiated in agreement with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
