Reshuffle in key political, military and security posts in Syria
Syria, Politics, 7/7/1998
In a report from Damascus, BBC correspondent Salwa Istwani said that Lt. Gen. Mahmoud al-Shaqa was appointed chief of the Syrian intelligence after of the firing its former chief, Lt. Gen. Bashir al-Najjar.
Al-Shaqa, she said, is considered one of Syria's most important military officers. He is also known for his long experience in security and intelligence as he was the chief of military intelligence for the city of Quneitra, capital of the Golan.
Al-Shaqa was later given responsibility for the security forces that took part in the Gulf War with the international coalition in 1991. His last post was as director of engineering weapons administration in the Syrian army. He was known for his honesty and commitment to his career.
Former intelligence chief, Bashir al-Najjar has been accused of several lapses pertaining to security violations. Syrian political sources told correspondents that the Syrian capital will witness several changes and measures during the coming days and weeks targeting key political, military and security posts.
