El-Mahdi urges Muslim leaders to declare position toward Sudanese regime
Sudan-Regional, Politics, 7/7/1998
Former Sudanese Prime Minister and leader of the opposition state party El-Sadiq El-Mahdi, urged the Islamic leaders Sheikh Al-Azhar Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, and the revolution guide in Iran Ali Khamenei to declare their position toward the Sudanese government's methods and the practices of the Islamic Front.
El-Mahdi said that issuing an official statement toward these fronts will help his opposition topple Omar El-Bashir's regime which he said destroyed Sudan, stating that the northern leadership in Khartoum is practicing corruption in Islam's name."
El-Mahdi urged the 10th Islamic conference -- which concluded its works in Cairo on Sunday -- to taking measures to assure the validity of the Islamic behavior in the political work, adding that these measures will "expose the trends of those who divert from Islam."
He added, "The Sudanese people are arranging themselves for removing the current regime," and he expressed his hope that the Sudanese opposition will find Arab support and understanding for its efforts to topple the current government.
