Terrorist network cracked in Lebanon
Lebanon, Local, 7/4/1998
The Lebanese military intelligence recently cracked a terrorist ring working at foreign directions in a bid to destabilize Lebanese security. Some 11 members of the network out of their presumed 20 members have been arrested so far.
Lebanese security sources elaborated that members of the network who were arrested admitted to involvement in acts of killing and bombardments that have recently taken place in Beirut. The sources added that explosives were seized as evidence of the network members' involvement in these brutal activities, which aim to undermine Lebanon's stability.
On Friday in Beirut, Lebanese Defense Minister Mohsin Dalloul said that new details will be announced shortly about the terrorist network responsible for the recent series of explosions that took place in Lebanon. In his meeting yesterday at Ali al-Nahri town in the Bekaa, Dalloul praised the role of the Lebanese army who clamped down on the group of terrorists linked closely to Israel. He added that this network and, therefore, Israel aim at undermining security and stability in Lebanon.
Dalloul stated that specialized Lebanese army units led by commander of the Lebanese army, Lt. Gen. Emil Lahoud, had discovered Israeli cells. He added that the discovery of this terrorist network in Lebanon is evidence that Israel is not honest in its proposals to withdraw from south Lebanon. The Israeli premier stands against peace, he said. The Lebanese people have to know the dimensions of the Israeli game.
Reports added that the group was also connected to the disbanded Lebanese Forces.
The Daily Star reported that Bassam Antoine Harb, who was on of the arrested men, admitted that he tried to acquire materials to construct a bomb targeting Lebanese Minister of Interior Michel Murr.
