President Hafez al-Assad has made a reshuffle in the armed forces' leadership covering the army's Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Hikmat al-Shehabi and director of the Intelligence Department Lt. Gen. Bashir al-Najjar.
London-based daily Al-Quds al-Arabi said that "high-ranking" sources in Damascus were quoted as saying that al-Shehabi has been retired, as he is at the age of retirement, and was succeeded by his deputy, Lt. Gen. Ali Aslan. The sources added, "The decision taken on Wednesday to sack Lt. Gen. Najjar was taken because of mistakes and law breaking he committed."
The sources elaborated that President Assad released a decree providing for appointing Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahman al-Sayyadi as the army's deputy chief of staff.
