Egyptian foreign minister: Israeli policy is illogical
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 7/2/1998

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said yesterday that, "The Israeli policy is unjustified and illogical."

Moussa's declaration came in reply to a statement made by David Bar Ilan, the spokesman of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, concerning the current discussion in the US Security Council on the Israeli plan to expand Jerusalem.

Bar Ilan said: "We hope that reason wins and that the U.S.A prevents Israel's condemnation in the U.N."

The Egyptian minister in his reply added, "We hope reason and logic come back to the Israeli policy so that it would stop creating the problems especially where it concerns Jerusalem and the peace process."

Moussa's remarks are not alone and come on the heels of strong criticism of Netanyahu's policy by Israel's President Ezer Weizman.

The issue of Jerusalem is currently being discussed by the United Nations for a possible condemnation of Israel over Netanyahu's decision to expand control over "greater Jerusalem." Jerusalem's status has been left to be determined as agreed to by all parties in signed agreements and formal US policy, in final status negotiations between Israel and Palestine.
