South Lebanon fighting continues as monitors meet
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 7/2/1998

Lebanese resistance forces on Wednesday night attacked with rockets and machine-guns Israeli troops moving on Sujoud - al-Rayhan road in al-Tuffah district. In a statement, the resistance said that direct hits were scored against the enemy positions.

Further reports from south Lebanon said the Israeli occupation forces on Wednesday morning shelled the town of Shabaa from its position in al-Zaffata by heavy artillery. The Israeli bombardment was accompanied by intensive sorties over al-Tuffah district.

On Wednesday night, Israeli helicopters mopped up the valleys of the eastern sector using heavy machine guns. The Israeli helicopters were attacked by Lebanese anti-aircraft missiles.

Earlier in the day, Lebanese security sources said the Israeli artillery positioned in al-Dabsha and al-Dahra bombarded the hills of al-Tuffah district and al-Zahrani river bed.

Meanwhile, the April Understanding monitoring committee on Wednesday held a meeting in the border town of Naqoura. The participants in the meeting discussed Lebanese and Israeli complaints. The Lebanese complaint is pertinent to Israel's bombardment of al-Sawanneh town in southern Lebanon, whereas the Israeli complaint alleged that Lebanese resistance forces shelled Israeli positions in the south from a populated area in the central sector.
