Meguid calls for an immediate action on Jerusalem
Regional, Politics, 7/1/1998

Esmat Abdul Meguid, the Arab League's secretary-general, stated that the resolution of the Israeli government to expand the borders of Jerusalem shows hostility toward peace and called for Arab solidarity and immediate action to preserve its Arab identity.

In press statements after his arrival at Cairo Airport today, Abdul Meguid said that the resolution of Israeli government clearly shows disdain to peace and uncovers its Zionist plans for Judaizing not only Jerusalem but also the Arab occupied territories of the Golan Heights and south Lebanon.

Abdul Meguid also called on the United States to bear its responsibilities and force Israel to abide by the terms of reference established during the Madrid peace conference.

He emphasized the importance of the Arab states taking immediate action to strengthen and preserve Jerusalem's Arab identity, and to unite their positions in order to protect Arab security.
