Sudan, Military, 7/1/1998

A spokesman for the Sudanese Army, Lt. Gen. Abdul Rahman Sewar, said that unidentified planes are dropping foodstuffs, supplies and logistic materials to Sudanese rebels in al-Nouba mountains in Kurdofan in the center of Sudan.

In a statement issued today by the Sudanese daily "Akhbar al-Saa," the spokesman said that government troops could isolate rebel elements, that escaped to al-Nouba mountains, by cutting supplies to Bahr el-Gazelle and the Upper Nile region in the south.

Also, Sudanese President Omar Bashir said, "The Sudanese armed forces regained yesterday Aqik harbor and the location of Kesrat Aqik on the Red Sea from the rebels' hands."

At the same time, a statement from the Sudanese armed forces said that the rebels escaped, and left behind different weapons and ammunition as well as a number of bodies, which are currently being counted.

The statement added that the Sudanese forces are chasing the rebels, confirming their intention to reclaim every inch of Sudanese territory.
