AL calls on Arab states to import Somali meats
Somalia-Regional, Economics, 6/30/1998

The Arab League has called upon its members to resume importation of meats from Somalia after the Somali livestock was proven free from fever and cattle diseases, especially as meat exports generate the main income for Somalia.

The AL Assistant Secretary General for Arab Affairs Ahmad Bin Hali said that a report in this respect has been circulated to all Arab states after the AL received yesterday a report from the resident UN coordinator for humanitarian aid, which states that livestock in Somalia is free from diseases which were rumored to have been infected.

Bin Hali added that the report reached these facts after experts from the World Health Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the national establishment for virus research in South Africa held a three-month fact-finding mission in Somalia and that proved both man and livestock are free from fever and disease.
