General Assembly extends over $22 million for Sahara mission
Morocco, Politics, 6/30/1998

The United Nations General Assembly approved a budget of more than 22 million USD for the Minurso (U.N. Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara) to cover the period from July 1 to next october 30.

The General assembly requests the United Nations Secretary-General to reduce the expenses related to general service agents, hire local agents for these services while taking into account the Minurso needs.

The Minurso is monitoring the identification of potential voters in the U.N brokered referendum that will determine whether the Sahara, a former Spanish colony retrieved by Morocco in 1975 under the tripartite accords between Morocco, Spain and Mauritania, sets up on its own or incorporates into Morocco.

The Mission has identification centers in the Moroccan southern provinces, in the Tindouf camps (south-western Algeria/stronghold of the Polisario), and in northern Mauritania. The Mission opened other centers in northern Morocco to identify Sahrawi natives living in these areas, Map reported.

Initially set for next December 7, the referendum will most likely be postponed to the beginning of next year in view of the obstacles erected by the polisario to hamper the ongoing identification of would-be voters in the consultation.

According to the latest figures made public by the U.N. mission for the referendum in the Sahara (Minurso) some 73,456 would-be voters have been identified since last December 3, when the operation resumed after almost a two-year suspension.

The new figure brings to 133,568 the total number of persons identified since the operation first began in 1994.
