Jordan rejects the concept of a second Madrid
Jordan, Politics, 6/30/1998
Jordan's Foreign Minister Jawad Anani rejeced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's call to hold a second Madrid international conference to discuss the peace process.
Anani told the reporters that the terms of reference of the current process are those agreed upon at the Madrid peace conference held in 1991.
Anani said, "Netanyahu is seeking to escape responsibilities towards the Palestinian authority and honoring the Oslo accords by proposing multilateral talks" "which he knows that Arab states will not accept."
Anani called on the Israeli prime minister to concentrate on implementing his commitments and stop a flow of suggestions, including his call to hold a referendum on the redeployment plan.
"Solutions exist," Anani said, "If Netanyahu wants peace, all he has to do is to accept them."
