Calm restored in Yemen
Yemen, Local, 6/27/1998
The Yemeni authorities restored calm to Yemen on Thursday following confrontations between demonstrators and the tribes on the one hand and the police on the other, that resulted, according to the minister of the interior, in the deaths of five persons, whereas the opposition said that 13 persons were killed.
In the capital Sanaa, a greater number of policemen have withdrawn from the main streets after being deployed last Saturday when demonstrations started in protest of the decision made by the government to increase the price of fuel and basic foodstuffs.
Few policemen were seen in front of Sanaa University, whereas in Mareeb armed soldiers can be intensively seen where bloody confrontations between the police and the armed tribes took place.
Yemeni Minister of the Interior Hussein Arab said that 5 civilians died, while another 12 people were reported as wounded, Mena reported.
