Kuwait and Iraq exchanged accusations at Arab parliamentary conference
Iraq-Kuwait, Politics, 6/27/1998

Sessions of the eighth Arab parliamentary conference in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, witnessed a controversy yesterday between Ahmed al-Saadoun, the chairman of the Kuwait Nation's Council and Saadoun Hamadi, the chairman of the Iraqi National Council, as the two exchanged accusations over the issue of Kuwaiti captives in Iraq.

The controversy started with the declaration of the Iraqi parliamentary chairman's declaration that Kuwait brings up the issue in all the international meetings and that Iraq does not hold any Kuwaiti captives. He also said that Iraq is ready to receive a fact-finding committee from the Arab Parliamentary Union.

In his answer, al-Sadoun denied what was said by the chairman of the Iraqi parliament and accused him of a lack of credibility when denying the existence of 605 Kuwaiti captives in Iraq.

Al-Sadoun said that Iraq has continued to deal with this humanitarian issue in an unacceptable way.
