African mediation efforts to continue between Eritrea and Ethiopia
Eritrea-Ethiopia-OAU, Politics, 6/27/1998
Ibrahim Dagsh, the spokesman of the Organization of African Unity, said yesterday that African mediation to solve the border dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia will continue.
Dagsh said that the failure of the first round of talks between OAU delegation and each of the two countries doesn't mean the end of mediation, pointing out that the central system of the mechanism to settle African disputes is to discuss the methods of future moves to defuse the crisis between the two sides.
The African official added that Eritrea and Ethiopia have agreed upon three points of a Rwandan - American initiative adopted by the organization.
He stated that the only difference centers on returning the Eritrean forces to the positions they held before the crisis broke out, which Eritrea refused.
The official confirmed that the only good way to settle the dispute is discussion to achieve stability, security and peace instead of wars and destruction in the African Horn.
