Some 16 Islamist activists delivered to Algeria
Algeria-Syria, Politics, 6/26/1998

Leader of the London-based al-Muhajereen (immigrants) group, Omar Bakri Muhammad, said that Damascus has delivered at least 16 Algerian Islamic activists to Algeria in accordance with the new anti-terrorism pact signed by the Arab states. He said that those people, most of whom have lived in Syria since 1992, were delivered at the beginning of this month.

Al-Muhajereen is banned in Syria. It claims it has no connection to any country but represents the interests of all Muslims in the Arab homeland.

Muhammad added that the Islamist activists are members of the Islamic Salvation Front.

A spokesman for "Freedom for the Islamic World" with London as a headquarters also noted the delivery process and number of delivered activists.

No news was reported on this issue from Damascus or Algiers, but should it prove to have taken place it would be the fruit of the Arab-anti terrorist pact which was signed by some 22 Arab states.

Meanwhile, Algerian dailies on Wednesday said that 9 persons, including Islamists and civilians, were killed in recent days. Sawt al-Ahrar (voice of Liberals) said that an armed group killed three civilians after they were stopped at a false blockade on the road leading to al-Kuremieh village near al-Shalaf city.

Le Tantique said that unidentified persons killed Muhammad Bandnah (50), a father of five, after they ambushed him and shot him during night.

Meanwhile, Algerian security forces killed five Islamists, including two in Jejeil in the eastern part of the country, two in al-Shalaf to the west and one in the capital Algiers. The latter's name is Muhammad Wahhab, killed in al-Muhammadiah suburb.
