Bahrain to build a bridge linking it to Hawar island

The Bahraini English daily "Bahrain Tribune" quoted a spokesman for Bahrain's Information Ministry as saying on Wednesday that Bahrain intends to build a bridge of 22.5 km linking the main Bahrain's island to the Hawar islands which are under dispute with Qatar over its sovereignty.

The spokesman added that a small airport will be built on the main Hawar island, just under two kilometers northwest of Qatar, which by its turn claims these islands as its property, in addition to other smaller islands between the two neighboring states.

The spokesperson added that a sea resort on the main Island of Hawar, including 44 villas and one hotel, will start within the few coming months to receive tourists.

Relations between Qatar and Bahrain have been deteriorated in recent years because of old border disputes now under arbitration at the International Court of Justice in the Hague. The disputes are over sea border demarcation and sovereignty over the Hawar islands and al-Zeyara district on the coast of Qatar.

Besides Hawar, Qatar claims sovereignty over Fashet al-Duble islands, controlled by Bahrain. Experts say these islands are rich in oil and gas.
