Arab Parliamentary Union meets in Mauritania
Regional, Politics, 6/26/1998

The Arab Parliamentary Union started the proceedings of its 8th congress in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on thursday, to discuss items related to joint Arab action, Arab solidarity and a work plan to promote the role of Arab legislators in materializing these goals.

Addressing the opening session that was chaired by Mauritanian premier, Speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives (lower house of the bi-cameral parliament), Abdelouahed Radi, condemned the Judaization policy of Jerusalem and called for Arab reconciliation to face up this threat. He urged the international community to pressure Israel to abide by international legaltity and the accords concluded with the Palestinian goverment.

Radi called on the Arab states to adopt a new political culture privileging the general interest and consensus solutions, in a bid, he said, to reinvigorate Arab cooperation and unify Arab positions vis-a-vis the European partners in international and regional organizations. He stressed the need to upgrade joint Arab action at the economic level and to establish a common arab market in order to be able to take up the challenges presented by world economic groupings.

After the opening of the 8th congress, the council of the Arab Parliamentary Union held its 32nd session that adopted a number of resolutions amending and modernizing the union's financial system and statutes.

The council reelected Morocco's Noureddine Bouchkouj as secretary general for another term and examined preparations for the holding of an international colloquium on Jerusalem in Morocco next November 26-28, Map reported.

The council decided to hold the Arab-European meeting in Damascus next July 11-12 and the parliamentary meeting on the Arab commoin market in Beirut in the spring of 1999.
