44 policemen and 24 terrorists killed last year
Egypt, Politics, 6/25/1998

The Egyptian Human Rights Organization stated that 44 Egyptian policemen and 24 members of Islamist armed groups were killed during confrontations between the two sides last year, in a report on Egypt last year.

The report laid the principle responsibility for the deaths of policemen and security men on the groups. The report said that the groups' operations became more violent as a sort of vengeance, aimed at creating greater destruction and vandalism.

The report criticized the continuation of presenting civilians to the military court for trials, and stated that this aspect will be a source of anxiety due to the lack and international and constitutional guarantees in these courts.

The report also said that the military judiciary this year examined five cases, in which 13 persons were sentenced to death. The number of death sentences that the military court has issued since 1992 till the end of the last year has reached 83 of which 60 have been carried out.
