Regional, Politics, 6/24/1998
Muhammad Barakat, the head of the Arab Organization for Atomic Energy, said that Israel's possession of nuclear weapons conflicts with the comprehensive peace demanded by the Arab states and the whole world.
He said, "Peace with Israel should have conditions, among which is not possessing nuclear weapons, and if these conditions do not exist, peace will be fragile and breakable at any time."
Ambassador Mahmoud Karem the board director manager of weapons agreements in the Egyptian Foreign Ministry and head of the Arab committee concerned with the treaty project for making the Middle East an area free of weapons of mass destruction said that Egypt and the Arab states are monitoring the moves concerning reports of Israeli nuclear tests in Aqaba Gulf.
Karem said, there are ongoing talks and investigations which include the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization in Vienna. He refused to comment as to whether the talks resulted in the actual confirmation of the reported Israel nuclear test.
Hareetz reported on the 18th of this month that Israel's deputy defense minister Silvan Shalom denied that a nuclear test took place on May 28th as re ported by the Internation Atomic Energy Agency.
