Six people killed in acts of violence in Yemen
Yemen, Politics, 6/23/1998

Yemeni police sources said that six persons including two policemen were killed and eight were wounded in Yemen during the fourth successive day of demonstrations against an increase in fuel prices.

A Yemeni police chief said on Monday, "Three persons including two policemen were killed and another 7 persons were wounded in Maareb, 170 km east of the capital Sanaa." A policeman said, "One person was killed and another was wounded" in confrontations in Taaz, 260 km from the capital.

Eyewitnesses said that two other persons were killed by gunfire during confrontations in Arhab district near Sanaa. Demonstrations continued for the fourth day in Ab and Hija, 190 km south of Sanaa, and 130 km east of the capital respectively, according to statements by citizens of the two cities.

On Saturday, the government held an emergency session and decided to ban gatherings and reiterated its determination to continue with financial reform programs which started in 1995 in collaboration with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, MENA reported.

Meanwhile, opposition parties, including the Yemeni coalition for reforms, called upon the government to retract the increase in fuel prices, but refrained from announcing that they are behind the demonstrations.

The Yemeni government, led by Prime Minister Abdul Karim al-Iryani, on Friday decided to increase fuel and certain basic commodities prices in the framework of the economic reform program which has been carried out since 1995 provided for lifting off support for prices.
