Meguid calls on world community to force Israel to join nuclear non-proliferation treaty
Regional-Israel, Politics, 6/23/1998
In the meetings of the technical committees concerned with setting up the Middle East non-proliferation treaty Arab League Secretary-General Esmat Abdul Meguid confirmed that the Arab League is following up on the subject of the Indian - Pakistani nuclear issue within its concern over removing weapons of mass destruction, at the top of which come nuclear weapons and within the Arab concern with encouraging the establishment of a zone free from nuclear weapons.
Abdul Meguid also said that what arouses astonishment is that those reacting to nuclear tests in India and Pakistan are not paying attention to Israel, which is launching experiments and possesses nuclear weapons.
Abdul Meguid called on the international community to force Israel to join the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and subject all its nuclear weapons to inspections to help the region avoid exposure to an arms race, that would increase tensions and threaten resources and energies at a time when the Israeli government is destroying all chances for establishing a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
