Two students wounded in demonstrations, other Yemeni developments

Two persons were wounded in Yemen during a demonstration held on Sunday in Rada, 130 km Southeast of the capital, Sanaa, which also witnessed a protest demonstration organized by students.

A Yemeni police official was quoted as saying that the two wounded students (one is 15) were hit by bullets fired by other demonstrators, whom he described as outlaws. He denied that security men share any responsibility in the incident.

The police official added that the Rada demonstration which was dispersed Sunday, included hundreds of persons.

In the capital Sanaa, the police dispersed a demonstration organized by students in objection to a hike in fuel prices. Eyewitnesses said the demonstrators, who came out Sanaa university, intended to head for the headquarters of the Ministry of Justice while chanting antigovernment slogans.

Exams, which should have started on Sunday, have been postponed for a week because of the strike observed by teachers demanding an increase in their salaries.

In another development, Yemeni kidnappers on Saturday night released seven Italian tourists who were kidnapped last Thursday. A high-ranking Yemeni security official said the seven tourists were released in the Shabwa district of northern Yemen, thanks to mediation by tribal clans, adding that security forces are chasing the kidnappers.

Meanwhile, Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh stressed that Yemen's relations with Saudi Arabia are good, noting the efforts exerted to settle border demarcation between the two countries. In a statement to the London-based al-Hayat daily issued on Sunday, the Yemeni President added, "We have so far realized two thirds of the matter, and dialogue still goes on two main points, Thaar mountain and al-Muoaj spearhead."

On the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia, President Saleh said, "Yemen is a neutral state," and Yemen hopes that the problem between the two countries will be settled amicably.
