Jordan, Health, 6/20/1998
Jordan has registered four cases of AIDS in 1998, an official in the Jordanian Public Health Ministry told Al-Arab Al-Youm paper.
The source said that up to date AIDS cases in Jordan reached 178, out of whom 106 were Jordanians and 72 foreigners, Map reported.
The source also said that among them there are 116 AIDS-inducing HIV positive cases and 62 people who are AIDS infected. It added that 45 people have died of the same disease until now.
The official said that 24 Jordanians were infected by the disease inside the country, and 66 from outside. The Jordanian government deports any HIV/AIDS infected people back to their countries.
Last year, it was estimated that 2.3 million people died of AIDS, a 50 percent increase over 1996.
The United Nations AIDS program (UNAIDS) said in a recent statement that an estimated 16,000 new cases of HIV infections are being registered daily. Statistics warn that by the turn of the century, the number of people living with AIDS will rise to 40 million.
A recent UNAIDS report revealed that one in every 100 sexually active adults worldwide is infected with the virus.
