Postponing the visit of Libyan president to Cairo confirms the crisis
Egypt-Libya, Politics, 6/20/1998
The reasons behind the postponement of Libyan President Moammar Gaddafi's visit to Cairo, originally scheduled for June 3, to an unspecified time have been unknown till now.
Diplomatic sources stated that the reason behind the delay is Libyan president's distance from the communications to hold an Arab summit that preceded his visit, despite the fact that Gaddafi was the first leader to call for this summit to discuss the challenges the Arab states are facing.
The sources said the dispute between Libya and Egypt began when Gaddafi noticed that Egypt was not enthusiastic toward the Arab foreign ministers' meeting, beside non-commitment to the embargo resolutions imposed upon Libya, then the latter accused some countries from benefiting from the sanctions, meaning Egypt.
The sources added that Tripoli did not formally inform Cairo about the postponement of Gaddafi's visit to Cairo, claiming that Cairo did not inform Tripoli of the visit of Israeli Minister of Defense Yitzhak Mordechai at the same time as Gaddafi's scheduled visit until just hours before the start of reception rituals.
The new date for Gaddafi's visit to Egypt has not been announced, which confirms that the dispute between the two countries has grown wider.
