PLO's Qaddoumi: Convening Arab summit is essential
Palestine-Regional, Politics, 6/18/1998

The head of the political department of the Palestine Liberation Organization, Farouk Qaddoumi, stated that it is essential to hold an Arab summit to confront the current challenges facing the peace process.

In a statement to ArabicNews.com, Qaddoumi said that it is vital to hold an Arab summit to confirm the unity of the Arab position in confronting the challenges resulting from the obstinate Israeli stance toward the peace process, represented in Israel denouncing the ratified agreements.

Qaddoumi added that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is taking provocative actions against the Palestinians in order to make them react violently so he can tell all countries of the world that the security of Israel is in danger, and accordingly work on canceling the agreement signed by the previous Israeli government.

Qaddoumi also said that the Arab strategy for peace is the base within which the Arab states have to adopt the essential position for rescuing the peace process in the Middle East according to the land for peace principal.

Qaddoumi confirmed the importance of returning solidarity to the Arab nation, especially because the Arab states own the most important strategic resources in the world, petroleum, which can be used as it was in 1973, where Europe and the U.S. were shackled.

Then he accused the U.S. of being feeble and cowardly before Israel, saying that the U.S. is capable of playing an effective and vital role in forcing Israel to fulfill U.N. resolutions because it sponsored Israel at the beginning of its history.

Qaddoumi criticized the Israeli prime minister, saying, "He neither wants to gives us anything nor complete the agreements that his two previous counter parts have signed," adding the Netanyahu wants to avoid delivering land and proceed directly to final status discussions.
