Sudan expects attack on Juba
Sudan, Military, 6/17/1998

The Sudanese opposition presented a new outcome from its battles with the Sudanese army in eastern Sudan, confirming that its forces were able to kill 742 soldiers during the last five weeks.

The spokesman of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, Yasser Erman, said that 189 soldiers were captured by opposition forces in the Blue Nile state, except in the city of El-Damazian which is still threatened by the opposition forces.

Sudanese police warned that the leader of the SPLA John Garang is getting ready to launch a new attack on Juba before the coming round of negotiations with the Sudanese government which are to be held in August 1998 in Addis Ababa.

The policeman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Garang moved 2,700 of his 6,000 forces in the Blue Nile to a mountain near Juba.
