Algeria requests clarification from Libyan ambassador on Maghreb Union
Algeria-Libya, Politics, 6/17/1998

Sabaa Abdul Aziz, the spokesman of the Algerian Foreign Ministry, said that the Libyan ambassador in Algeria was summoned to make clarifications concerning Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi's statement, in which he laid the responsibility for the halt in the activities of the Arab Maghreb Union on Algeria and Morocco.

The Arab Maghreb Union comprises Libya, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Mauritania.

The Algerian spokesman said, "The responsibility for the halt in the union's activity is obvious, as the Moroccan foreign minister sent a message in 1995 to his Algerian counterpart in which he asked him officially to halt the union's activities, yet this did not prevent Algeria from sending many envoys to the Maghreb Union's countries and take the initiative in activating it."
