Russia to inform Iraq on result of efforts to remove sanctions
Iraq-Russia, Politics, 6/17/1998
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Victor Posovaluke, arrived in Baghdad one day after receiving a medal of honor from Russian President Boris Yeltsin for his mediation, which contributed to settling the last crisis between Iraq and the United Nations.
Iraqi sources told ArabicNews.com that Posovaluke will visit as a personal envoy for the Russian president and that he will hold talks with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz.
The sources did not exclude his meeting with Iraq's President Sadam Hussein.
The sources said the Russian official will inform Iraqi leaders on the efforts exerted by Russia to convince the permanent members of the Security Council to issue a decision to remove Iraq's nuclear file out of the inspection phase in what is considered by Russia as a strong incentive for Iraq to confess to potential sites of prohibited weapons that the UN inspection team has been charged to look for.
