Syrian deputy foreign minister to visit Ankara in July
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 6/17/1998

Syrian sources told ArabicNews.com that a Syrian official will head to Turkey at beginning of the coming month to resume discussions between Damascus and Ankara.

The sources said "that Syria is making a condition that Turkey agrees that the Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem pay a visit to Damascus before the Deputy Syrian foreign minister Adnan Omran's heads to Anakara."

Omran's visit to Ankara comes in reply to the visit of the head of the Middle East Department at the Turkish Foreign Ministry, who held talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and Assistant Foreign Minister Adnan Omran.

The sources said, "The two sides agreed during the talks on resuming the discussion, as Syria will stop its anti-Ankara campaigns in return for Turkey slowing its military cooperation with Israel."

The sources added that the Turkish official's talks in March were the first meeting between two countries in more than three years.
