Barak to Mubarak: majority of Israelis for peace process reactivation
Regional, Politics, 6/15/1998

Leader of the Israeli opposition Labor Party Ehud Barak said the majority of Israelis are for reactivating the Middle-East peace process.

"I told President Mubarak that the majority of Israelis are for continuing the peace process and the establishment of a just and lasting peace in all the region", Barak told the press on Monday after meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the latest developments in the efforts to save the stalled Mideast peace process.

He added that 75 percent of Israelis want the second phase of the Israeli pullout from the west bank implemented.

The talks dealt with the present situation on the Palestinian track and the ongoing efforts by the United States, the European Union and Egypt to rescue the peace process.

Barak arrived Monday morning in the Egyptian capital in the wake of a visit paid to Cairo a few days ago by Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai and his meeting with Mubarak to discuss means of activating the peace process on the Palestinian track.

Palestinian-Israeli talks came to a halt in March 1997 when Israel started construction of a new Jewish settlement in Arab East Jerusalem.

In a related development, a top Labor Party official, Youssi Belein, arrived here Sunday night for a few hours visit during which he held talks with Mubarak's political advisor Osama el-Baz on the peace process impasse, Map reported.
