Jordan calls for respect for human needs
Jordan-Austria, Politics, 6/12/1998
Jordan's Crown Prince Hassan has ended a three-day visit to Austria that included talks on horizons for economic cooperation and developments in the peace process.
Crown Prince Hassan delivered a lecture at the Diplomatic Academy and met with ambassadors from Arab and Islamic nations.
As political conflict dominates the Middle East region, the human dimension, the key to solving the region's problems, seems to be the least addressed, Crown Prince Hassan said. He addressed officials, intellectuals and international organizations in Vienna and called for comprehensive approach in dealing with the Middle East region.
"The new code of conduct," Hassan said, "can be achieved through a dynamic partnership for peace, development, cooperation and security."
"It has been said that the US has the capacity," he said, "I hope it will be realized in the weeks ahead." But he added that "it was remarked in our part of the world that the US may not have desire. It is said that Europe, you have the desire, but you do not -- for whatever reason -- have the capacity."
Speaking to politicians and intellectuals at the Diplomatic Academy, Jordan's Crown Prince said a durable peace must be underpinned by the reduction of economic disparities. "The concept of security in the region," he said, "should be based on economic security for the people in the region and respect for human needs."
New security and peace formulations include some considerations over and above military factors, they are environmental, demographic growth, mass migration, organizations, communal issues, terrorism, drugs and organized crime, as well as economic development, Hassan stated.
