Singer Nasri Shamseddine house hit by Israeli warplanes
Lebanon-Israel-Norway, Military, 6/12/1998

Israeli warplanes on Thursday raided al-Tuffah district in south Lebanon and launched four air-land missiles preceded by extensive shelling of artillery against al-Tuffah district and fake raids over al-Nabatieh and neighboring towns.

Lebanese security sources said that a group of Israeli warplanes flew over al-Tuffah district and then two jets launched four air-surface missiles against the region located between Kafer Malki and Barcy.

The sources added that the Lebanese anti-aircraft artillery intercepted the Israeli jets. Israeli bombardment against Joun town in al-Kharroub district damaged the house of the late Lebanese singer Nasri Shamseddine and other houses in the town. The Israeli bombardment also covered the areas of Kafer Fallous, and al-Tuffah district heights.

The Lebanese resistance on Thursday afternoon attacked the commander of contingent 20 of South Lebanon Army troops on Roum road, east of Sidon, and direct hits were scored. In a statement, the resistance said that one of its group ambushed the commander and his companions and attacked them with machine-guns and rockets, and the attacks resulted in several deaths and injuries and the destruction or damage to vehicles. Lebanese security sources said that a South Lebanon Army member who was killed in an attacks by the Lebanese national resistance in Annan is named Tony Hubeika.

Defections from the South Lebanon Amy are on the increase for fear of Israeli withdrawal from South Lebanon, as Israel provides military and economic backing to the SLA. People arriving from the occupied part of south Lebanon said that armed confrontations took place between two SLA groups in Hasbia district after Raja Ward, the security official in the region, fled and surrendered to the Lebanese authorities.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian government decided to withdraw its contingent of UNIFIL troops in south Lebanon. ITAR TASS news agency reported on Thursday that the Norwegian government justified its decision by citing economic difficulties linked to the continuous presence of this contingent in Lebanon.
