Egyptian Boat owners want confiscated fishing vessels from Libya back
Egypt-Libya, Politics, 6/10/1998

The Egyptian organization for human rights addressed a call to Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi to release 20 Egyptian fishing ships that were confiscated between March 1995 and May 1998.

The families of the fishing boats' owners asked Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to use his strong relations with Gaddafi to intervene by issuing a general pardon and releasing all the fishing ships which are currently confiscated and held in the Libyan harbors.

The families that own the confiscated boats called on Libya to reconsider its decision, adding that the fishermen did not mean to violate the law, but it was the sea conditions that caused the violation of international law.

The families of these boats said that they are all from Alexandria governorate and that eight fishing boats from Domyat are being held in Libyan harbors.

These families asked the Egyptian government to intervene with the Egyptian banks to stop demanding nearly 50,000 to 100,000 Egyptian pounds for each boat and to stop the interest on the debts until the boats are released.
