Japan lends Morocco $55 million for bypass between highways
Morocco-Japan, Economics, 6/10/1998
Morocco and Japan signed last week a loan agreement for the funding of a bypass between the highway of Mohammedia (40 km north of Casablanca) and that of Casablanca-Settat.
The loan, worth $55 million, will be used to build a 27 km-long bypass between the highway linking Rabat and Casablanca with that between Casablanca and Settat so that users going from Settat to Mohammedia do not have to cross through jammed Casablanca city.
During a visit he paid to Japan on June 3-6, Moroccan Equipment Minister Bouamour Taghouane, signed the relevant agreement with the Japanese Overseas Economic Cooperation Fund.
This project is part of an ambitious program to build 1,500 km of highways by 2010.
The minister signed another loan agreement worth $47 million for a rural electrification program that will supply electricity to around 88,000 rural households, Map reported.
While in Japan, Taghouane held a work session with an executive at the Japanese Foreign Ministry who announced that his country wants Morocco to take part in a conference for development in Africa it is planning to hold.
In another meeting with the vice-chairman of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency, the minister enquired about the progress made in the project to supply heavy public works equipment for the building of rural roads that will allow for the equipment of two teams able to construct up to 1,687 roads.
The minister expressed readiness to open in Morocco an institute for training in engines driving and maintenance and for receiving African trainees in this institute that Japan financed by contributing assistance to operation for five years up to 1997.
