Fighting erupts in Somalia
Somalia, Military, 6/8/1998
Fierce fighting erupted on Saturday and Sunday between Aideed troops and those of the Rahnawin army near Beedawa town, west of the capital Makadishu.
Local radio was quoted as reporting that the Rahnawin army forces on Sunday defeated Aideed troops outside town, but the latter restored its control on Sunday after receiving reinforcements from Makadishu.
The radio report added that Aideed's forces, which suffered heavy losses, built up fortifications at the airport area, noting that anti-aircraft artillery and missile shelling was heard in the already-abandoned city. No news was reported on the number of casualties, but local radios said dead bodies were scattered in the town's streets.
