Jordan is optimistic over peace process

King Hussein of Jordan expressed optimism over the Middle East peace process following talks with Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai who arrived in Jordanian capital yesterday afternoon.

The discussion between the king and the defense minister focused on getting the hindered Middle East peace process back on track.

"The meeting was positive," King Hussein told the reporters and voiced optimism for a restart in the negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis.

"The American peace proposal is very important," he said and expressed hope that the US would continue to play an important role as the main sponsor of the peace process.

Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai, who also held talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak last week, said that the Israeli government would take the US proposal into account.

"We talked about our mutual concerns," King Hussein said, "I hope we will do all what we can to ensure that progress is made so that peace becomes a reality." Answering reporters King Hussein said, "After hearing Defense Minister Mordechai, I am more optimistic."

The Israeli defense minister told the reporters that there are projects and new ideas that, "need to be encouraged by everyone."

Tomorrow, Jordanian Minister of Agriculture Mujhim al-Khareisa will arrive in Israel for a one-day visit. Israeli radio reported that the Jordanian minister will discuss with his Israeli counterpart Rafael Eitan matters pertaining to agricultural cooperation.
