US to increase US troops in Gulf
United Arab Emirates-Gulf-USA, Politics, 6/5/1998

President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan on Thursday received the US undersecretary of state for political affairs, Thomas Pickering, currently on a tour on the Gulf region.

The United Arab Emirates news agency said that talks dealt with "the situation in the Gulf region and Southern east Asia and the Middle east peace process developments."

Pickering arrived from Muscat where he had discussed with Sultan Qaboos the situation in the Arab Gulf region and bilateral relations. Before Muscat, Pickering visited Kuwait where he announced that the US has decided to increase its durable military presence even if it has to withdraw its reinforcements it has sent to the Gulf region during the recent crisis with Iraq.

He stressed that US President Bill Clinton intends to "raise the level of US troops in the Gulf region continuously" as a result of the Iraqi threats.
