Syrian import - export committee meets on local needs

Chaired by Syrian Premier Mahmoud al-Zou'bi, the import and export rationalization committee met on Tuesday. The participants discussed memoranda submitted on commodities and items proposed to be imported to meet the needs of local consumption and manufacturing and export requirements.

The committee discussed the actual needs for these commodities and items, both positive and negative impacts of importing them, and the consequences on producers, consumers and the national economy.

The committee discussed a study on surplus poplar tree timber in al-Assad and the Euphrates basin installations. Proposals to market this surplus in local and foreign markets after being manufactured, were reviewed.

The committee also discussed a memorandum submitted on ensuring customs protection for several national products to be able to compete with similar imported foreign items and a memorandum submitted for fixing the long-term validity of processed, canned and imported livestock production.
