Beirut launches a strong election campaign
Lebanon, Politics, 6/3/1998
The Lebanese government is getting ready for the municipal elections in Beirut and the South on Sunday, after the elections in Mount Lebanon and the north, held over the past two weeks, ended. Lebanese sources expect strong competition in Beirut and Sidon.
A source in Hizbullah told ArabicNews.com that the party is currently examining joining the coalition in Beirut, on the condition that the distribution of seats is not done through shares, confirming that the party will make its final decision within the coming hours.
Lebanon Newswire reported that a multi-party coalition of Beirut candidates was formed after consultations by Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, and the Daily Star said that an opposition coalition is likely to be announced today.
