Saudi-Jordanian officials conclude meetings, summit on hold
Saudi Arabia-Jordan, Politics, 6/3/1998
Saudi Arabia and Jordan said that any Arab summit to discuss the faltering peace process needs careful preparation to ensure its success.
Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah and Jordan's King Hussein discussed the Middle East peace process and the difficulties facing it in talks they held in Amman over the last two days. They called for implementation of agreements signed between Israel and Palestine.
Crown Prince Abdullah, who ended his two-day visit to Jordan yesterday, also discussed ties between Jordan and Saudi Arabia with Jordan's King Hussein.
The visit of the Saudi crown prince was part of consultations among Arab leaders on the destiny of the peace process.
The two sides have generally agreed in their discussions about an Arab summit that there has been the need for an Arab summit. But both sides said that without a proper mechanism and a clear agenda no summit of any scope would materialize. They expressed that if a summit was to be held it would be prepared properly to meet Arab aspirations.
They also reaffirmed support for the peace process to be carried based on the formula agreed to in Madrid, Spain and called on Israel to implement signed agreements between Israel and Arab states.
Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal who accompanied the crown prince during his visit to Jordan told reporters that there was no doubt that Israel wants to demolish the peace process, while the Arab states want to build it.
