Prince Abdullah for mediation between Jordan, Palestine and Syria
Regional-Jordan, Politics, 6/1/1998

The Jordanian weekly al-Majd quoted well-informed Arab sources as saying that the current visit of Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah to Jordan has come partly at the request of the Palestinians and the Jordanians to restore warm relations with Syria.

The paper added that Arafat, who recently visited Cairo and Riyadh, appealed to President Mubarak and King Fahd to exert their "good offices" with President Hafez al-Assad in order to restore normal relations with Arafat and his government.

On the Jordanian level, the sources added that Jordan has expressed to Saudi Arabia its desire to restore warm relations with Syria, adding that during his today's visit to Jordan, the Saudi crown prince will hear new assertions on the Jordanian's desire to maintain reconciliation.

The sources added that Jordan's Prime Minister Abdul Salam al-Majali's blamed Syrian Prime Minister Mahmoud al-Zou'bi for his negative response to al-Majali's desire to visit Damascus and revive the Syrian-Jordanian higher joint committee, chaired by the two countries' premiers.

Al-Majali said he has repeatedly phoned al-Zou'bi during the few past months in order to revive the joint committee, but he got no Syrian response.
